IMC Midwifery Review Board

The main purpose of the Midwifery Review Board (MRB) is to encourage all midwives to pursue education, develop skills, and obtain certification.  This process is voluntary and gives professionalism, credibility, and a credentail to midwives who qualify.  The MRB encourages freedom of choice in childbirth for consumers and safe standards and guidelines for all midwives.

The Midwifery Review Board recommends that Idaho midwives become Certified Professional Midwives (CPM's) through the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM), which replaces the former Idaho Midwifery Council certification process.  The CPM credential offers national standards for midwifery education, guidelines for safe practice, and continuing education and peer review requirements and opportunities.  CPM status validates midwives to peers, clients, other medical professionals, and to our communities.  This is especially important in Idaho, a state which currently offers no licensing and/or regulation of direct-entry midwifery.

Secondly, the MRB offers an accountability process to handle complaints or concerns via mediation rather than litigation.  Formal complaints between any midwife, certified or non-certified, and a consumer, client, or other health care professional may be brought before the MRB for a fair hearing.  The intent is not sit in judgment or to issue punishment.  The goal is also to enhance communication, knowledge, skills accountability, and credibility within the midwifery community.

The MRB is composed of four Certified Professional Midwives (CPM's) in good standing and currently practicing in Idaho.  Please feel free to contact any of the MRB members for further information or assistance with any concern regarding midwifery care.
